Modelling in Geology

چکیده

Modem geology was founded by James Hutton at the end of the 18th cenhuy as an observational, descriptive, qualitative, and subjective science. It was the pioneer work of Pearson (1901) and Spearman (1904) in statistics applied to agriculture, biology, medicine, and psychology, that led to the first major inroads of quantitative techniques in geology and the models they used were above all statistical (Agterberg, 1974). The period of greatest growth of quantitative methods in geology occurred after 1950 when it was discovered that both statistical and multivariate techniques could be used on the computer and could therefore be applied for the first time to the enormous quantity of geological numerical data. There are many ways of describing the modelling process itself, but as used in geology, it tends to follow the following stages (Rogerson, 1988 and 1989a,b):

Source Rock evaluation, Modelling, Maturation, and Reservoir characterization of the Block 18 oilfields, Sab’atayn Basin, Yemen

A total of 183 core and cutting samples from seven exploratory wells were selected to be analyzed by Rock-Eval pyrolysis. These cores have been drilled through the Lam and Meem Members of the Madbi Formation and contain the major source rocks of Yemen´s sedimentary basins. Contents of total organic carbon were measured and Rock-Eval pyrolysis was performed to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential ...

Two Modelling Approaches for Predicting Water and Salt Generation to Upland Streams: BC2C & 2CSalt

Predicting the impact of land-use change on water and salt generation from upland areas at a catchment scale is a difficult task. Across large catchments there are often limited field measurements, and so predictions are forced to rely on modelling. However, at this scale input data for models is usually restricted to information surfaces such as rainfall, geology, and surface topography, and h...

Bayesian Inference on Latent Structure in Time Series

A range of developments in Bayesian time series modelling in recent years has focussed on issues of identifying latent structure in time series. This has led to new uses and interpretations of existing theory for latent process decompositions of dynamic models, and to new models for univariate and multivariate time series. This article draws together concepts and modelling approaches that are c...
